Rethinking Osteoporosis
EXPLORING NATURAL OPTIONS
Your Bone Health, Naturally Supported
A diagnosis of osteoporosis or osteopenia often feels like an urgent call to act — and for many, that means being steered toward prescription drugs as a first step. But medication isn’t the only option. Even the U.S. Surgeon General recommends starting with nutrition, physical activity, and addressing underlying causes before resorting to pharmaceuticals. For many, plant-based calcium supplements can offer effective and empowering support — especially when paired with consistent lifestyle changes.
UNDERSTANDING DEXA SCORES
Not All Bone Density Tests Tell the Full Story
Most DEXA bone density scans report a T-score, which compares your bones to those of a healthy 20 to 30-year-old. That means a perfectly healthy 60-year-old could be diagnosed with osteoporosis — not because their bones are weak, but because of an unrealistic comparison. There’s another measure — the Z-score — that compares your bone density to others in your age group. While often overlooked in diagnosis, it offers a more realistic picture. Understanding both scores can help you make more informed decisions about your bone health — without rushing into high-risk medications.

RX DRUG SIDE EFFECTS
Understanding Prescription Drug Treatments
Some prescription medications may help slow bone loss or build density in the short term — but they often come with risks and typically stop working once treatment ends. Here’s what to know:

Prolia® (denosumab): A monoclonal antibody that reduces bone resorption by inhibiting osteoclast activity. Like bisphosphonates, it may increase the risk of atypical femur fractures and ONJ.

Evenity® (romosozumab): An injectable that stimulates bone formation by blocking sclerostin, a protein that limits bone growth. While effective, it may cause swelling in the arms or legs and, in rare cases, osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ).

Fosamax® (alendronate): A bisphosphonate shown to prevent one fracture per 100 women treated (NNT = 100). It can disrupt natural bone remodeling, potentially resulting in brittle bones, femur fractures, and gastrointestinal issues.

Forteo® (teriparatide): An anabolic bone drug that may increase bone density by up to 10%. However, it carries a black box warning due to an observed risk of osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in animal studies. Approved only for short-term use (maximum of 18 months).
These drugs also typically require follow-up medication to maintain results — often locking users into a cycle of dependency with limited long-term benefit.
